Panel of 29 motoring writers announce category winners ahead of final voting later this month

Porsche feels the love with two nominations in UK Car of the Year Awards 2020

Great Britain. The appeal of a Porsche, be it powered by a petrol engine or electric motor, has been underlined with the news that the all-new Taycan and iconic 911 have been shortlisted for the UK Car of the Year Awards 2020.

The tradition of Porsche to develop the benchmark sports car in each market segment enters a new era with the Taycan, which brings the Stuttgart manufacturer into the battery electric category for the first time.

Just as Porsche is renowned for its emotive petrol engines, the new Taycan sees the company bring its trademark engineering passion to the electric motor – and first feedback from customers, enthusiasts, and media is clearly demonstrating the effective high performance of the car’s new, innovative powertrain.

Nine cars from 69 entries have made it through to the final round of judging, based on the expert opinions of 29 motoring writers across media in the UK.

The sports car credentials of the Porsche Taycan clearly impressed the panel, which placed it first in the Best Performance class. In addition, the 911 was voted Best Cabriolet, making Porsche the only manufacturer to triumph in more than one category.

Performance meets efficiency
Unveiled last September, the Taycan is a four-door sports saloon that offers a unique combination of attributes, providing typical Porsche performance and connectivity with everyday usability. At the same time, highly advanced methods in production, as well as the features of the Taycan itself, set new standards in the fields of sustainability and digitalisation.

In the citations for nominees, judge Jonny Smith commented; “Taycan clinches this accolade based upon its huge technological leaps and ability to prove that EV sports cars can do more than just sprint the quarter mile. The engineering is just superb, and it remains the highlight new car test drive for 2019.”

Ollie Marriage added the Taycan is “the first electric car you can buy purely for the way it drives.”

The flagship Turbo S version of the Taycan can generate up to 560 kW (761 PS) overboost power in combination with Launch Control. The Taycan Turbo S accelerates from zero to 62 mph in 2.8 seconds, and combines this with a range of up to 257 miles (according to WLTP). The top speed is 161 mph.

The Porsche Taycan Turbo S is priced from £138,826.00 RRP and the Porsche Taycan Turbo from £115,858.00 RRP. The third member of the Taycan family, the 4S, was launched last October and is priced from £83,367.00 RRP.

Timeless machine
The open-top 911 continues a decades-long tradition, established when Porsche unveiled the prototype of the first 911 Cabriolet at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt in September 1981: customers and fans alike were instantly captivated. The first fully open-roof 911 variant rolled off the production line in 1982, and it has been a constant feature in the model range ever since.

The latest model echoes the timeless and contemporary design of the Coupe, remaining unmistakably a Porsche 911 in Cabriolet form. The fully-automatic soft top has an integrated glass rear window and the roof structure contains magnesium surface elements, known as ‘bows’, which reliably prevent ballooning of the roof at high speeds. The top can be opened or closed at speeds up to 30 mph; and new roof hydraulics reduce opening time to around twelve seconds – quicker than ever - while an electrically extendable wind deflector ensures high comfort for the driver and passenger.

The 911 Cabriolet is available as a Carrera and Carrera S with rear-wheel drive, and Carrera 4S with all-wheel drive. The 911 uses the charismatic flat-six cylinder, 2,981 cc, twin-turbocharged ‘boxer’ engine mounted in the rear. In the Carrera it produces 385 PS (283 kW) at 7,500 rpm and in the S models 450 PS (331 kW) at 6,500 rpm. The power is delivered by a newly-developed eight-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission. The 911 Carrera Cabriolet models are priced from £92,438.00 RRP.

The UK Car of the Year jury acknowledged how competitive the judging was this year, but the appeal of the 911 remained strong. “…in reality there’s only one car on the list you can use just as happily to take to the supermarket as you can to do over 170 mph on the Autobahn. It looks great, drives incredibly and, thanks to over 50 years of evolution, feels like it’ll last forever,” commented Alex Goy.
