New features for the 911 Carrera model range

Manual gearbox and new equipment options introduced on Porsche 911

Great Britain. A seven-speed manual gearbox is now available to order for the Porsche 911 Carrera S and 4S models, in place of the standard eight-speed double-clutch PDK transmission. Long regarded as the benchmark sports coupé, the re-introduction of the manual gearbox underlines the dynamic reputation of the 911.

The manual gearbox, available at no extra cost and combined with the Sport Chrono package, will appeal to drivers who seek even more driving involvement by changing gear themselves. The DIN kerb weight of the 911 Carrera S Coupé manual is 1,480 kilograms – 35 kilograms less than with PDK.

Simultaneously as part of the new Model Year, a host of new equipment options are also offered for the 911. These include Porsche InnoDrive, which is already familiar from the Panamera and Cayenne, and a new Smart Lift function for the front axle.

In the driving seat: seven-speed manual with Sport Chrono package
The manual gearbox with seven ratios available for the 911 Carrera S and 4S comes in combination with the Sport Chrono package. Also included is Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV), with variable torque distribution on the rear wheels via controlled braking interventions, and a mechanical rear limited slip differential.

A highlight of the Sport Chrono package, when paired with the manual gearbox, is a rev-match function. When the driver shifts down, this function automatically opens the throttle momentarily to increase the engine revs and match it to the higher gearbox speed in the lower gear for smooth downshifts, thereby preventing load change effects. The package also includes dynamic engine mounts (that control the movement of the engine mass – and thus optimise ride comfort or chassis rigidity - according to driving mode), PSM Sport function for the Porsche Stability Management (PSM), a rotary mode switch on the steering wheel with positions Normal, Sport, Sport Plus, Wet and Individual (for a bespoke set-up), as well as a stopwatch and the Porsche Track Precision App.

Also new is the tyre temperature indicator. This feature within the Sport Chrono package was first introduced with the 911 Turbo S. The temperature indicator is combined with that for tyre pressure. At a low tyre temperature, the blue bars warn about reduced road grip. As the tyres warm up, the colour of the indicator changes to blue-white and then to white once the operating temperature has been reached indicating maximum possible grip is available. The system is deactivated and the bars are hidden when winter tyres are fitted.

The 911 Carrera S with manual gearbox accelerates from zero to 62 mph in 4.2 seconds and can reach a top speed of 191 mph where permitted. Fuel consumption is 26.4 - 28.0 mpg Combined, equivalent to 229 – 243 g/km Combined CO2 emissions.

In the 911 Carrera for the first time: Porsche InnoDrive and Smart Lift
The new Model Year sees the inclusion of Porsche InnoDrive in the list of 911 options. On cars with PDK, the assistance system extends the functions of the adaptive cruise control system by optimising the driving speed for up to three kilometres (1.86 miles) predictively in advance. Using the navigation route map data, it calculates the optimum acceleration and deceleration values and deploys them via the engine, PDK and braking system.

The system automatically takes into account corners and gradients, and also speed limits if wished. The driver, who remains in full control, has the possibility of individually defining the maximum speed at any time. The system detects the current traffic situation using radar and video sensors and adapts control accordingly. The system even recognises roundabouts. As with a conventional adaptive cruise control, InnoDrive also continuously adjusts the distance to the vehicle in front.

The new optional Smart Lift function for all 911 versions allows the nose to be lifted automatically at specific, low ground clearance locations where the vehicle is driven regularly. With the electro-hydraulic system on the front axle, the ground clearance at the front apron can be increased by around 40 millimetres. The system stores the GPS coordinates of the current position at the push of the button. If the driver approaches the location from the same direction again, the front of the car will lift up automatically.

930 Leather Package evokes style of the original 911 Turbo
The 930 Leather Package introduced with the 911 Turbo S is now also available for 911 Carrera models. This interior upholstery option is inspired by the first Porsche 911 Turbo (Type 930) and is distinguished by a coordinated interplay of colours, materials and individual enhancements. The equipment package includes quilted seat centre panels in the front and rear and quilted door panels.

Other new equipment options
New lightweight and noise-insulated glazing is now also available for the Coupés in the 911 series. The weight advantage compared to standard glazing is over four kilograms. The improvement in interior comfort achieved by reducing external road and wind noise represents a further benefit. This lightweight laminated safety glass is used in the windscreen, rear screen and all door windows.

The Ambient Light Design Package includes interior lighting that can be adjusted in seven colours. And a further flourish of colour is added by the new exterior paint finish in the special colour option Python Green.
