Innovative all-electric Taycan 4S and iconic 911 Turbo S scoop big wins

Porsche Taycan tops the bill in The Sunday Times Motor Awards 2020

Great Britain. The motoring writers at British weekly newspaper, The Sunday Times, have presented the innovative, all-electric Porsche Taycan 4S with its top prize of Car of the Year in its annual Motor Awards 2020.

This latest recognition for the four door, four-wheel drive sports car extends an impressive tally of media plaudits since it first went on sale a year ago, and has helped drive strong customer interest from both existing Porsche owners and new enthusiasts. Further underlining the benchmark credentials of the car, the Taycan was also voted Electric Car of the Year which saw it eligible for the top prize overall.

The Taycan 4S generates up to 390 kW (530 PS) overboost power output. Equipped with the optional Performance Battery Plus, it delivers up to 420 kW (571 PS). In both variants, the Taycan 4S accelerates with Launch Control from a standing start to 60 mph in 3.8 seconds. The top speed is 155 mph where permitted. The WLTP Combined range is up to 254 miles with the standard Performance Battery (gross capacity 79.2 kWh) and up to 288 miles with the Performance Battery Plus (gross capacity 93.4 kWh). The maximum charging capacity (peak) is 225 kW (Performance Battery) or 270 kW (Performance Battery Plus).

Breathtaking acceleration, power delivery typical of a sports car and outstanding continuously available performance – the 4S model shares these strengths with its sister Taycan derivatives. With two permanently excited synchronous electric motors with hairpin winding driving the front and rear wheels, and a two-speed transmission on the rear axle, the overall drive architecture of the Taycan features many technical innovations.

The Taycan is the first production vehicle with a system voltage of 800 volts instead of the usual 400 volts for electric cars. This is a particular advantage for Taycan drivers on the road: in just over five minutes, the Performance Battery Plus can be recharged using direct current (DC) from the IONITY high-power charging network for a range of up to 62 miles (according to WLTP). The charging time for five to 80 per cent SoC (state of charge) is 22.5 minutes under ideal conditions. In addition, Taycan drivers can comfortably charge their cars with up to 11 kW of alternating current (AC) at home.

In the separate race for Sports Car of the Year, the new 911 Turbo S stood apart from its rivals to clinch this category prize.

After much deliberation and a lot of fun putting the finalists through their paces, the judges commented: "The 911 is still, for our money, the ultimate sports car and the Turbo S is the ultimate expression of its extraordinary abilities. Capable of serious thrills when required but also comfortable for use every day, it has a depth of character that no others can match, built over decades of development. But Porsche is also a company that has set its sights on the future, and with the Taycan it has shown electric cars can be not only fast but also offer superb driver engagement. Taycan is the new poster child for plug-in cars and shifts the debate from 'Why go electric?' to 'When can we go electric?'"

The Porsche 911 Turbo has been synonymous with relentless performance for over four decades, becoming regarded as the benchmark ultimate production sports car. Everyday usability and exclusivity combined with innovative technology lends every generation 911 Turbo a powerful allure. The place of the 911 Turbo as a highlight of many bedroom and garage wall posters has seen the car become a hero to enthusiasts and owners through the years – a true living legend.

A new flat-six, 3.8-litre engine with twin turbochargers is the beating heart of the 911 Turbo S and delivers 650 PS (478 kW). The maximum torque reaches 800 Nm. The eight-speed Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) double-clutch automatic transmission has been custom-tailored to transfer the higher torque forces of the Turbo S. Overall, the yardstick sprint from 0-62 mph takes just 2.7 seconds, and where permitted the top speed is 205 mph.
