Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo carries off Top Gear ‘Best Electric Car 2021’

Great Britain. The new Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo has sparked the imagination of the Editors at Top Gear magazine who have today awarded it the title of ‘Best Electric Car 2021’.

This is the first global media accolade for the all-wheel drive, five-door Taycan Cross Turismo model, and brings the tally of titles for the all-electric Porsche sports car to over 50 worldwide. In a neat symmetry, Top Gear was also the first magazine to present an award to the Taycan saloon, hailing it as its ‘Car of the Year’ in 2020.

With the renowned reputation of its sister saloon in mind, the Top Gear writers concocted a thorough programme to assess the all-round ability of the Cross Turismo. A journey of many hundreds of miles across the UK from east to west concluded with a high-speed assault on a closed road of loose surfaces; the ‘Sweet Lamb’ special stage made famous from the Wales Rally GB.

In keeping with its brief to offer adventure, electrified, the new Taycan Cross Turismo was more than equal to the challenge. Awarding the Porsche its prize for ‘Best Estate’ and ‘Best Electric Car 2021’, the magazine commented; “It’s one of those cars that sweeps along effortlessly, carrying speed easily, lightly and deftly, the sort of speed that leaves passengers clueless as to how quickly they’re travelling. There’s no heave around corners, no loss of body control and most remarkably of all, no tension in it. I literally cannot think of another car that blends speed and comfort as well as this, another car that you could load four people into and drive so rapidly yet serenely.”

Reflecting on the handling and control of the 761 PS Taycan Turbo S Cross Turismo over mixed surfaces, the writer concluded; “An electric crossover should not be able to do what this one did to a gravel rally stage…..(it) turned in the performance you’d expect of a genuine rally car.”

Separately, BBC Top Gear TV star, Paddy McGuinness, heralded the Porsche Taycan as his favourite electric car of 2021. The show co-host commented; “..because it’s electric you don’t expect it to feel like a proper Porsche, and then you get in it and it does. And then you start driving it and it really really does. It’s a car I just loved driving, so much I asked if I could keep it a little bit longer.”

In 2020, the Taycan was the second best-selling Porsche overall in the UK, its popularity driven by its unique combination of attributes including typical Porsche performance, innovative powertrain and connectivity solutions, and everyday usability. The addition of the new Cross Turismo is driving further interest from customers in the first months of this year, and underlines the pure Porsche credentials of the company’s all-electric sports car.

Taycan Cross Turismo
The greater versatility offered by the all-wheel drive, five-door Taycan Cross Turismo makes the car a true all-rounder. Like the Taycan saloon, the Cross Turismo benefits from an innovative electric drive with 800-volt architecture. The new high-tech chassis with all-wheel drive and adaptive air suspension standard on the Cross Turismo ensures confident handling and greater control off the beaten track. Add up to 47 mm more headroom for rear seat passengers and over 1,200 litres of luggage capacity, accessed through the large rear tailgate, and the Cross Turismo is ready for adventure.

The appreciation of the Cross Turismo by Top Gear follows the Taycan saloon being named ‘Best EV Executive Car’ by Fleet World magazine in its annual Great British Fleet Awards earlier this year.

The Taycan overview
There are four models in the Taycan saloon line-up, starting with the dynamic rear-wheel drive version. This model sits beneath the Taycan 4S, Turbo and Turbo S in the range hierarchy. The all-wheel drive Taycan Cross Turismo range also has four models; spanning the 4, 4S, Turbo and Turbo S.

The new Taycan with rear-wheel drive chassis is available with two sizes of battery, offering up to 301 miles range (WLTP). With the standard Performance Battery, the new model delivers up to 300 kW (408 PS) in overboost mode with Launch Control; this increases to an output of up to 350 kW (476 PS) with the optional Performance Battery Plus. Nominal power is 240 kW (326 PS) or 280 kW (380 PS) respectively.

The Taycan accelerates from a standing start to 62 mph in 5.4 seconds, whichever battery is specified. Its top speed is also 143 mph in both configurations, while its maximum charging capacity is up to 225 kW (Performance Battery) or up to 270 kW (Performance Battery Plus).

At the top of the range is the flagship Turbo S version of the Taycan, which features two permanently excited synchronous electric motors driving the front and rear wheels. It can generate up to 560 kW (761 PS) overboost power in combination with Launch Control, and accelerate from zero to 62 mph in 2.8 seconds. The Turbo S has a range of up to 258 miles (according to WLTP). The top speed is 161 mph where permitted. Equivalent figures for the Taycan Turbo S Cross Turismo are 0-62 mph in 2.9 secs, up to 260 miles range (according to WLTP) and a top speed of 155 mph.

The Taycan is the first production vehicle with a system voltage of 800 volts instead of the usual 400 volts for electric cars. This is a particular advantage as, in just over five minutes, the Performance Battery Plus can be recharged using direct current (DC) from the IONITY high-power charging network for a range of up to 62 miles (according to WLTP). The charging time for five to 80 per cent SoC (state of charge) is 22.5 minutes under ideal conditions. Taycan drivers can also comfortably charge their cars with up to 22 kW of alternating current (AC) at home or at public charging stations.

The overall drive architecture of the Taycan features many technical innovations, including electric motors featuring hairpin winding for higher performance and efficiency, and a two-speed transmission on the rear axle for faster acceleration.

The Taycan is also the first Porsche model range available with an entirely leather-free interior. Interiors made from innovative recycled materials underscore the sustainable concept of the electric sports car.

The Taycan model range comprises eight models and two bodystyles:
