Stuttgart sports car manufacturer triumphs in towing test

Porsche pulls in Tow Car of the Year Award win for Cayenne

Great Britain. Porsche has added to its recent haul of awards with the Cayenne E-Hybrid winning its category in the Caravan and Motorhome Club annual Tow Car of the Year ceremony.

The Cayenne E-Hybrid has a 462 PS petrol:electric powertrain with a total of 700 Nm pulling power – combining typical Porsche performance with everyday versatility, these attributes helped the four-door, four-wheel drive SUV place first in the class for caravans over 1700 kg and also impressed the judges with its authentic sports car driving experience.

“This is a faultless tow car,” the judges commented. “An authentic drivers’ car which can also handle a big twin axle caravan. It has shattering performance and a superb gearbox. One for the real driving enthusiast who also needs genuine practicality and pulling power.”

The expert team from the Caravan and Motorhome Club ranked the 32 cars entered by caravan weight categories – rather than by list price – in a move designed to make it easier for buyers to know which cars could tow their caravans.

Each car was put through its paces at the UTAC Millbrook Proving Ground near Bedford, which provides a variety of test-driving environments. Before heading off on the track, specialised criteria such as tow ball height, both solo and hitched up, were assessed, as well as the day-to-day topics of boot space and visibility when manoeuvring. The car/caravan combinations then set off around the UTAC Millbrook circuit to be put through their paces dynamically.

The Porsche Cayenne has an impressive track record of making light work of towing, setting a Guinness World Records title for Heaviest aircraft pull by a production car in 2017 by pulling an Airbus A380 passenger jet weighing 285 tonnes at Paris Charles De Gaulle airport. This latest recognition by the Caravan and Motorhome Club underlines the reputation of the Cayenne as the sports car among sports utility vehicles, combining effortless power and dynamic responsiveness.

The electric powertrain in the plug-in hybrid Cayenne and Cayenne Coupé models comprises an electric motor integrated into the eight-speed Tiptronic S automatic transmission. This delivers an output of 100 kW (136 PS) and 400 Nm, generating a purely electric top speed of 83 mph. Any increased power demand from the driver or switching to the Sport or Sport Plus driving modes activates the internal combustion engine, a three-litre V6 turbo with an output of 340 PS (250 kW). This contributes to a total system performance of 462 PS (340 kW). Combined WLTP fuel consumption for the Cayenne E-Hybrid models is 76.3 mpg – 91.1 mpg, equivalent to 85 – 71 g/km CO2 Combined.

Underlining the commitment of the Stuttgart sports car manufacturer to E-Performance, a number of upgrades were introduced last year to the Cayenne E-Hybrid that included increasing the gross capacity of the high-voltage battery to 17.9 kWh from 14.1 kWh. This extended the electric range by up to 30 per cent, and the Cayenne E-Hybrid can cover up to 25 - 27 miles using battery power (WLTP EAER Combined).

In 2020, the UK market share for hybrid and electric vehicles reached a record 17.5%. For Porsche, over half of all Cayenne models sold in the UK last year were E-Hybrid.
