Innovative all-electric Taycan Cross Turismo and iconic 911 GT3 scoop big wins

Porsche scores a double victory in News UK Motor Awards 2021

Great Britain. The motoring writers at The Sunday Times, The Times, Driving.co.uk and The Sun have presented the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo and iconic 911 GT3 coupé with top prizes in its annual News UK Motor Awards.

In addition to the proven strengths of the award-winning, all-electric Taycan sports saloon such as superior performance and long range, the all-wheel drive, five-door Cross Turismo offers even greater versatility that makes the car a true all-rounder.

Since 2019, the Stuttgart sports car manufacturer has expanded the product portfolio of its all-electric models and continues on the path towards sustainable mobility.
Like the Taycan saloon, the Cross Turismo benefits from an innovative electric drive with 800-volt architecture. The new high-tech chassis with all-wheel drive and adaptive air suspension also ensures confident handling and control off the beaten track. Add 47 mm more headroom for rear seat passengers and over 1,200 litres of luggage capacity, accessed through the large rear tailgate, and the Cross Turismo is ready for adventure.

In presenting the Taycan Cross Turismo with the award for Adventure Car of the Year, the judges noted the car’s “improved ground clearance, rugged trim panels and off-road driving modes, and more luggage space, too.” The experts also praised the combination of these broader talents with “the Taycan’s best qualities, including outrageous speed, ultra-rapid charging technology and a brilliant interior.”

The Taycan 4S Cross Turismo is fitted with the 93.4 kWh Performance Battery Plus as standard, delivering up to 420 kW (571 PS) overboost power output. The car can accelerate from a standing start to 62 mph in 4.1 seconds. The top speed is 149 mph where permitted. The WLTP Combined range is up to 281 miles. The maximum charging capacity (peak) is 270 kW with direct current (DC).

Breathtaking acceleration, power delivery typical of a sports car and outstanding continuously available performance – the Cross Turismo models share these strengths with sister Taycan derivatives. With two permanently excited synchronous electric motors with hairpin winding driving the front and rear wheels, and a two-speed transmission on the rear axle, the overall drive architecture of the Taycan features many technical innovations.

The Taycan is the first production vehicle with a system voltage of 800 volts instead of the usual 400 volts for electric cars. This is a particular advantage for Taycan drivers on the road: in just over five minutes, the Performance Battery Plus can be recharged using direct current from the IONITY high-power charging network for a range of up to 62 miles (according to WLTP). The charging time for five to 80 per cent state of charge is 22.5 minutes under ideal conditions. Taycan drivers can comfortably charge their cars with up to 22 kW of alternating current (AC) at home or at public charging stations.

In the separate race for Sports Car of the Year, the new 911 GT3 stood apart from its rivals to clinch this category prize. After much deliberation and a lot of fun putting the finalists through their paces, the judges commented: "While the new 911 GT3 is extremely rapid from zero to 60mph, what Porsche has remembered is that sports cars are about fun, not just statistics. Engine tweaks add a little horsepower, but the real work has gone into the suspension and chassis, which makes the car even more delightful through corners, with an unbelievably grippy front end and balance on turn-in, then a planted rear end when power is applied.” The writers concluded: “It's a car that thrills without terrifying and encourages the driver to eke out every last drop of performance. At a track, it's as close to perfection as you can get."

The Porsche 911 GT3 is the latest model in a revered series of the iconic, rear-engine, two-door coupé that brings technology from the race circuit to the street and offers a highly athletic road car fit for high performance driving on track balanced with the demands of everyday use.

Developed in close collaboration with Porsche Motorsport, the new 911 GT3 transfers pure racing technology into a production model more consistently than ever before. The double wishbone front axle layout and sophisticated aerodynamics with swan neck rear wing and striking diffuser originate from the successful GT race car 911 RSR, and the 510 PS (375 kW) four-litre, six-cylinder ‘boxer’ engine is based on the drivetrain of the 911 GT3 R, tried and tested in endurance racing. The acoustic high-revving engine is shared practically unchanged in the new 911 GT3 Cup racer. The result is a brilliant driving machine: efficient and emotive, precise, and high performing – perfect for the circuit and yet with characteristic usability.

The distinctive strength of the 911 GT3 lies in the sum of its characteristics. With a top speed of 199 mph (198 mph with PDK) it is faster even than the previous 911 GT3 RS. It accelerates from zero to 62 mph in 3.4 seconds. Porsche also offers the no-cost option of a six-speed manual transmission for a particularly pure driving experience.
