Big wins for Taycan 4S Cross Turismo and 718 Cayman GTS 4.0, with 911 GTS, Macan and Cayenne Coupé GTS named Best Buys

Porsche powers ahead in 2022 What Car? Car of the Year Awards

Great Britain. The new Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo has been named ‘Performance Car of the Year’ by What Car? magazine in its annual Car of the Year Awards.

This is the second year in a row the all-electric Porsche sports car has taken the crown. The Taycan is the first purely battery electric Porsche and since going on sale in 2019 has sparked a revolution in how EV sports cars perform. Underlining this, the Taycan was the best-selling car in 2021 for Porsche Cars GB, its popularity driven by a unique combination of attributes including typical Porsche performance, innovative connectivity solutions and everyday usability. The UK is the German manufacturer’s fourth-largest market globally and the second-largest for Taycan sales.

Joining the Taycan 4S Cross Turismo on the winners’ podium was the 718 Cayman GTS 4.0, which was named Sports Car of the Year. In GTS 4.0 guise, the mid-engine two-seater coupé adds an emotive flat-six ‘boxer’ powertrain to the familiar Cayman credentials of dynamic agility and sleek styling.

In addition, three further Porsche sports cars received Best Buy awards; the iconic 911 GTS coupé; the four-wheel drive, four door Macan; and the Cayenne Coupé GTS.

Each winner is a recommendation by What Car? magazine as one of the very best cars to buy, and the success of the Taycan endorses the design brief of the all-electric Porsche to be the sports car of its segment.

Taycan 4S Cross Turismo - Performance Car of the Year
In presenting the Taycan 4S Cross Turismo with the Performance Car of the Year Award, the What Car? judges commented: “The Taycan Cross Turismo takes all the strengths of the regular Taycan – namely its devastating pace, wonderful interior, and agile handling – and adds a more practical estate body and raised suspension. Those changes help it to excel on battered British roads, smoothing out all the ruts and divots while keeping it locked into the surface like a dedicated sports car.”

Like its saloon sibling, the Taycan Cross Turismo benefits from an innovative electric drive with 800-volt architecture. The new high-tech chassis with all-wheel drive and adaptive air suspension also ensures confident handling and control off the beaten track. Add 47 mm more headroom for rear seat passengers and over 1,200 litres of luggage capacity, accessed through the large rear tailgate, and the Cross Turismo is ready for adventure.

The Taycan 4S Cross Turismo has two electric motors with up to 420 kW (571 PS), overboost power with Launch Control. Acceleration from 0-62 mph takes 4.1 seconds with a top speed 149 mph where permitted. The WLTP Combined range is up to 281 miles with the standard Performance Battery Plus (gross capacity 93.4 kWh). The maximum charging capacity (peak) is 270 kW. In just over five minutes, the battery can be recharged using direct current from the IONITY high-power charging network for a range of up to 62 miles (according to WLTP). The charging time for five to 80 per cent state of charge is 22.5 minutes under ideal conditions.

718 Cayman GTS 4.0 - Sports Car of the Year
As well as pioneering developments in electric motor technology, Porsche is continuing development of hybrid powertrains and, in particular, emotional petrol engines. In the 718 Cayman GTS 4.0, the combination of its evocative, flat-six naturally-aspirated engine with the neat balance of its mid-engine chassis, presents a compelling package to driving enthusiasts.

By awarding the 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 the top prize for Sports Car of the Year, the writers at What Car? could not have been more emphatic in their praise for the nimble, two-door coupé. The judges remarked; “With its wonderfully precise steering, balanced handling and immense grip, nothing fazes the Porsche Cayman GTS. Plus, its 4.0-litre flat six engine is wonderfully sonorous. However, you don’t even need to start the car to enjoy it, because the interior looks and feels at least as special as any comparable rival’s, and provides a superb driving position.”

The Porsche 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 emphasizes long-standing Porsche attributes of a characteristically emotive power delivery and a focused driving experience, with a manual six-speed transmission and sports exhaust system. It can achieve the sprint from 0- 62 mph in 4.5 seconds, and where permitted accelerate on to a top speed of 182 mph. The rarefied combination of two seats, three pedals and six cylinders makes the GTS 4.0 a great companion for any journey.
