All-Access Hour with Maria Sakkari

“I’m excited for the clay court season”

Stuttgart. Maria Sakkari allowed herself a little break after the WTA 1000 tournament in Miami. The Greek is now going into the clay court season all the more motivated and cannot wait to go out onto court for the first time in front of a crowd at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix. The world No. 5 spoke about...

...her expectations for the tournament week in Stuttgart:
“I think everyone is super excited to be back in Stuttgart, especially now in normal conditions. It’s actually my first time that I will play here with a crowd. And I’m really enjoying being able to just go out into the city and enjoy Stuttgart. I’m super excited because it’s one of the best events of the season.”

...her preparation for the clay court season:
“It’s naturally a bit different here in the Porsche Arena because it is an indoor clay event which is why I’ve been training on indoor clay for the last two weeks. I had a week off after the tournament in Miami so that really helped me to just get back onto the tennis court being excited for the clay season. This is probably my favourite swing of the season and I feel good. I expect to need a few matches to get to my highest level. I’m sure it will get there.”

...the challenges on clay:
“Your have to make adjustments, also tactically. You have to hit the ball differently, and have a different way of structuring the point. I’m obvioiusly working on my mindset because I want to play aggressively. We play on a pretty quick courts at the tournaments in Madrid, Rome and Paris, as long as it’s not raining and the weather is good. I’m adjusting my game with a bit more height, using a little bit different shots. I think that it’s exciting because I like my game on the clay.”

...her impressions of Stuttgart:
“I’m really enjoying being here. I’m actually visiting the centre of Stuttgart every night for dinners and walks. I like that it’s very green. Of course, there are a lot of car manufacturers here and of course Porsche is the biggest one. It’s exciting to see all the different cars in the city. It’s a very beautiful place to be and I heard that the Stuttgart crowd is actually very nice. So I’m excited to start here.”
