Cammish emerges from dramatic weekend with championship lead

Dan Cammish (Redline Racing) led the way through a dramatic round five to build what ended as a flawless weekend for the double champion. Two pole positions, two fastest laps and two wins have put the Leeds-based driver emphatically back into the lead of the 2017 championship. Charlie Eastwood (Redline Racing), leader coming into the weekend, kept himself in the running with a pair of third place finishes, while Dino Zamparelli (JTR) continued his Donington form by taking the flag second in both races.

Qualifying
Dan Cammish (Redline Racing) timed a flawless final run perfectly as the water cleared from a soaking Oulton Park to secure his 25th and 26th Porsche Carrera Cup GB pole positions. Dino Zamparelli (JTR) claimed second place, with Porsche GB 2016 / 2017 Scholar Charlie Eastwood in third.

A heavy rain shower immediately before the session threatened to delay proceedings, but the 21-car field headed out on wets in extreme conditions to tame the 460 hp 911 GT3 Cup. Making the best of the early conditions were Cammish and Jamie Orton (Redline Racing), Orton slotting into P2 before claiming provisional pole just one lap later. Times began to tumble as the rain stopped and the circuit began to drain, Eastwood fastest from Cammish and Lewis Plato (JTR) when the red flags came out for a stranded Orton.

At the restart, it was Zamparelli who was in most determined mood, storming to the front of the pack with Plato and Tio Ellinas following to make it a JTR 1-2-3. First to spoil the team line up was Tom Wrigley (IN2 Racing), the local driver moving into P2 before being displaced by Cammish. However, Ellinas was rapidly moving himself back into contention and closed to within 0.115s of Zamparelli for P2.

In the final stages of the session, and with perfect timing, Cammish and Eastwood emerged from the pits with fresh wets to make the most of the improving grip. Cammish was the first and only driver to lap under 1:30s, posting a second lap only fractions slower to secure double pole positions for rounds five and six. Zamparelli’s earlier lap held for a pair of front row positions, while Eastwood took third for round five, Ellinas third for round six. Quietly posting his best qualifying result of the season so far, Ross Wylie (Slidesports) lined up for both races in sixth.

In Pro-Am1, Alex Martin (Team Parker Racing) held the early advantage on a sodden surface, but by the mid-point Justin Sherwood (Team Parker Racing) was making the best of the conditions and took the category lead. However, Martin slowly eroded this and on his final lap posted a time that saw him start both races from the head of the category.

After Shamus Jennings (G-Cat Racing) set the early pace in Pro-Am2, the fastest time ultimately came down to a fight between Donington Park double-winner Peter Kyle-Henney (IN2 Racing) and Rookie David Fairbrother (Slidesports). This duel resulted in a category pole position for Kyle-Henney in round five after a flying final lap and Fairbrother in round six.

Race one
Dan Cammish (Redline Racing) secured his 26th Porsche Carrera Cup GB victory to resume his lead of the championship after a chain of incidents at the first corner forced the race to be restarted and nine cars into retirement.

Cammish and Dino Zamparelli (JTR) led the field away from a tidy rolling start, but a clash towards the front of the 21 cars resulted in Tio Ellinas (JTR) facing the wrong way amidst the tightly-packed group. The ensuing chaos ended with Ellinas, Tom Wrigley (IN2 Racing), Jamie Orton (Redline Racing), Alex Martin (Team Parker Racing), Justin Sherwood (Team Parker Racing), Peter Jennings (G-Cat Racing), David Fairbrother (Slidesports), Matt Telling (Welch Motorsport) and Rupert Martin (Team Parker Racing) all being unharmed but unable join the restart.

Graeme Mundy (Team Parker Racing) had also been involved, but limped back to the pits where Team Parker Racing was able to effect emergency repairs. This service enabled Mundy to take the restart, the only Pro-Am1 runner to be able to do so, rejoining the race from the pitlane.

As Cammish and Zamparelli once again headed the field into the first corner, Charlie Eastwood (Redline Racing) made the best of the rolling start and managed to get alongside Zamparelli. However, the pair ran out of space and Eastwood was left to recover after a rotation on the grass, while Zamparelli was subsequently penalised two championship points.

Cammish earned himself a small margin ahead of Zamparelli, which remained fairly constant throughout the remaining 16 lap distance, the gap eventually opening to 3.2 seconds. As the lead pair resumed a duel reminiscent of 2016, Tom Oliphant (Redline Racing) held onto third from a rapidly closing Lewis Plato (JTR) while nursing damage from the earlier incident. By lap 15, from eighth on the original grid, Plato was close enough to take a look around the outside of Old Hall, and one lap later made the move stick after a run up the inside of the same corner. The pair went side by side into Cascades, but Plato kept ahead to take his second podium finish in a row.

Dan McKay (Redline Racing) once again showed his Oulton Park form with a strong run to fifth, while Ross Wylie (Slidesports) enjoyed a change of fortunes as he came through to take sixth and finish as top Rookie. Eastwood recovered to seventh, minimising his points deficit to Cammish and just ahead of a similarly displaced Euan McKay (Redline Racing).

Pro-Am1 was a story of survival, Mundy nursing his damaged car home to take the category win and boost his championship hopes, a significant achievement for both driver and team.

Both Peter Kyle-Henney (IN2 Racing) and Shamus Jennings (G-Cat Racing) came through unscathed to continue their weekend-long battle for the Pro-Am2 category lead. Jennings kept Kyle-Henney honest throughout the race, but was unable to deny the double Donington winner his third victory of the season. Also keeping out of trouble was Iain Dockerill (Asset Advantage Racing), who rounded out the Pro-Am2 podium.

Race two
Due to damage in round five, Tio Ellinas, Tom Wrigley and Peter Jennings were unable to take the start of round six. An even standing start for the reduced grid, led by Cammish, set up a clean run through the first corner. The race settled into a lead for Cammish which he maintained to the flag over Zamparelli, who found himself having to defend his second position hard from Eastwood in the later stages..

By lap 11, the Donington double winner had caught Zamparelli and was millimetres behind as the pair exited Lodge, the entertaining duel being curtailed by a red flag that saw the race declared after 13 laps. Lewis Plato repeated his impressive run through the grid in round five, starting seventh and passing Tom Oliphant for fourth with a perfectly timed move up the inside of Cascades on lap 11. Ross Wylie once again finished as top Rookie in eighth.

In Pro-Am1, Justin Sherwood took his first win of 2017 take the category lead, while a second place finish for Graeme Mundy moves him up into second. Despite bravely attempting to limp through to score points after a technical issue on the formation lap, Alex Martin ended his race in the pits and unclassified.

Peter Kyle-Henney made it four wins from four races, keeping himself just ahead of a strong Shamus Jennings much as he had in round five. A race long battle between David Fairbrother and Iain Dockerill for the final podium position ended in contact between the two on their 12th lap and the subsequent red flag brought the race to its conclusion. This left Rupert Martin to take third in the category, his third podium of 2017.

The next stop for the teams and drivers of the Porsche Carrera Cup GB is France and the Carrera Cup Le Mans which takes place on 17 June at the Circuit de la Sarthe. Follow their preparations at @CarreraCupGB on Twitter and @carreracupgb on Instagram.
