Porsche Carrera Cup GB continues to star on international stage

With four of eight race weekends completed, July is one of the busiest months of the year for the teams and drivers of the fastest single marque GT racing championship in the UK. The second half of the season begins at Snetterton on 29 / 30 July, but not before several stars of Porsche Carrera Cup GB once again take to the international stage, this time at the Goodwood Festival of Speed and Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup at Silverstone.

Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup
2017 has seen an unprecedented number of drivers progress from Porsche Carrera Cup GB to the next level of the Porsche Motorsport pyramid – Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup. Round five of this international series takes place alongside the British Grand Prix at Silverstone on 15 / 16 July and nine of the 32 car grid – almost a third – will be current or former Carrera Cup GB competitors.

Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup produces some of the fiercest competition from around the world, and 2017 has been no exception. A packed grid features two Porsche Junior drivers, Matt Campbell (AUS) and Dennis Olsen (NOR), who join Dan Cammish (GBR) among the contenders for the 2017 title. Running alongside selected Formula One Grands Prix, the championship provides challenges beyond the level of competition, such as learning new circuits and adapting to the Formula One rubber laid down throughout the weekend.

For 2017, Supercup has introduced the second generation 911 ‘Type 991’ GT3 Cup, one year ahead of Carrera Cup GB. Unlike in previous years, this means guest entrants from the domestic championship will not race their regular cars, but instead will need to adapt to the new car with its 4.0-litre, direct injection, 485 hp unit.

Leading the charge is 2015 and 2016 Porsche Carrera Cup GB champion Dan Cammish. Despite campaigning for a record third domestic title alongside his first full season in Supercup, Cammish has already claimed two podium finishes from four races, including second at the prestigious Monaco round. He heads to Silverstone fourth in the overall standings, having also taken the United Kingdom to fourth in the Nations League.

Joint third in the Rookie standings and eighth overall is Josh Webster. Much like Cammish, the 2014 Porsche Carrera Cup GB champion and Porsche GB 2014 / 2015 Scholar is participating in his first season of Supercup. A one-off appearance at Silverstone last year saw Webster place fourth, just 0.4 seconds away from the podium after qualifying fifth.

Underlining the strength of the programme is his successor, Porsche GB 2016 / 2017 Scholar Charlie Eastwood. Eastwood, who currently lies second in the Carrera Cup GB standings, will be making his second Supercup appearance at Silverstone in the same second generation 911 ‘Type 911’ GT3 Cup he piloted at the Goodwood Festival of Speed earlier in the month.

Another star of the 2016 race was 2015 Porsche Carrera Cup GB Rookie champion Tom Sharp, running as high as fourth during the heavily rain-affected race. For 2017, Sharp is making his third Supercup appearance at Silverstone and is joined in a full-season Supercup campaign at UK-based IDL Racing by 2016 Carrera Cup GB Pro-Am2 third-place finisher Mark Radcliffe.

When regular Carrera Cup GB competitor Tom Oliphant experienced Supercup for the first time at Silverstone last year, he laid claim to the most places gained after flying from 20th to 12th. Oliphant is competing in selected rounds in 2017, including Silverstone, and has already proven his ability to adapt to the new car with a pair of top ten finishes in Barcelona.

Competing in his second Supercup weekend from two is Sean Hudspeth, who placed third in the 2016 Carrera Cup GB Pro-Am1 category and had his first race in the new car last weekend at the Red Bull Ring in Austria.

Regular contenders include Porsche Carrera Cup GB race winner Paul Rees together with former competitor Ryan Cullen, who began his Supercup career at Silverstone last year and is representing Ireland in the 2017 Nations League.

Competition in the pinnacle Porsche championship is always fierce, but while Cammish remains the favourite to make it as far as the top step of the podium, the chances of strong home representation are high.

2017 Goodwood Festival of Speed
One of the world’s premier motoring events, the Goodwood Festival of Speed, opened July in spectacular fashion in front of a crowd of 200,000. At the heart of the action alongside the triumphant 2017 Le Mans car were seven stars of Porsche Carrera Cup GB and Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup, taking their places as part of the Porsche Motorsport family alongside the factory drivers and senior team members.

Swapping seats with the likes of Walter Röhrl and Nick Tandy, each driver was entrusted with driving both modern and priceless heritage machinery. Representing Porsche in the Michelin Supercar Run was Paul Rees, the Supercup driver and Carrera Cup GB race winner expertly piloting the 607 hp 911 Turbo S Exclusive Series – one of just 500 cars worldwide - to a podium finish.

Porsche GB 2016 / 2017 Scholar Charlie Eastwood took on a similar challenge in the hotly contested Shootout. Due to the short nature of the run providing limited opportunity to heat racing slick tyres, Eastwood elected to run the second generation, 485 hp 911 ‘Type 991’ GT3 Cup on championship wets. The Northern Irish driver shaved almost a second from his 2016 time to place 10th overall and third in class after a nail-biting finale.

Josh Webster, third in the 2017 Supercup Rookie standings and 2014 Porsche Carrera Cup GB champion, was sufficiently moved by his run in one of the most powerful race cars ever built, the 1,100 hp 1973 Porsche 917/30, to describe it as ‘the best moment of my life’. Webster also took a turn in the 2017 911 GT3, the basis for his racing GT3 Cup, as did fellow Supercup competitor Tom Sharp.

In 2016 Sharp experienced the Hill in the 935 ‘Baby’, but 2017 would see the 2015 Carrera Cup GB Rookie champion go one step further with a drive in the 860 hp 1978 935 ‘Moby Dick’. Sharing a WSC-95 in LMP1-98 guise were multiple Carrera Cup GB race winner Dino Zamparelli and Pro-Am2 front-runner Peter Kyle-Henney. For Kyle-Henney the opportunity was especially apt, having driven the car that deposed the WSC-95 – the 911 GT1-98 – at the 75th Members’ Meeting in March.

Further underlining the involvement of Porsche Carrera Cup GB competitors in the heritage of the marque was 2017 newcomer Ross Wylie. Fresh from his best result of the season to date, which came at the prestigious Carrera Cup Le Mans, Wylie had his first experience of the Goodwood Hill at the cramped controls of a 956, driven in period by Jackie Ickx and Jochen Mass. Such is the way with the Festival of Speed that Tom Kristensen (WSC-95) and Jochen Mass (956) both took the time to talk to the drivers about their time in the cars.
